Benefits of Brain Training

Ten years ago, smartphones as we now know them weren’t even invented yet. Forty years ago, personal computers were just being released. Technological advancements are growing exponentially year by year and with it, a world of 24-hour connection and potential for productivity. It’s no surprise that in America, the average person is sleeping an entire hour less than they did in the 1940s.

This new world of nonstop technology is creating an impact on our naturally occurring circadian rhythm. Our circadian rhythm is what dictates our energy level throughout the day. When we disrupt it, our quality of life can be drastically impacted. Just a few of the effects less sleep can have on your body are:

  • Impaired attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Increased risk of serious health problems such as heart disease, heart attack, heart failure, high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes just to name a few.
  • Lower sex drive.
  • Increased symptoms of depression.
  • Less than sharp memory.
  • Weight gain.
  • Drained capacity for empathy.

Though getting your recommended amount of sleep every night is the goal, many scientists believe that quality, not the quantity of sleep has the greatest impact on our well-being with deep sleep being the most regenerative stage of sleep. In light sleep and REM, our brainwaves are very similar to our brain waves in waking life. But, our brain waves in deep sleep have these long burst brain waves that are very different from our waking life brain waves. These long burst brain waves are called delta waves.

When we don’t get the deep sleep we need, it inhibits our ability to learn and for our cells and bodies to recover from all those interactions that we have during the day into our long-term memory or personalities. A lab out of Germany showed that if you could play certain sounds at the right time in people’s sleep, you could actually make sleep deeper and more efficient. This research showed you could actually improve next day memory performance with this sound.

This sound is the same burst frequency as your brainwaves when your brain is in deep sleep.  As we get older, we’re more likely to lose these regenerative delta waves. So, in a way, deep sleep and delta waves are actually a marker for biological youth. This sound pattern actually primes your mind to have more of these regenerative delta waves.

These sounds are a form of brain training.
